  1. I think that the school systems in not just Michigan, but in the country should not ban cell phones. Although there are many good reasons why they should be banned, there are also some reasons why they should not. The first reason is the 2001 9-1-1 attack. In one of the articles, it states that the students in the New York city school system were not able to contact their parents when the attack occurred. Many of the students stated that it would have been more convenient if they had a cell phone to contact their parents, since all the other phone lines were already in use. Another reason is that cell phones have been used for calling in bomb threats to schools and, in many communities, cell calls cannot be traced by public safety officials. So the students could easily save themselves from a school threat. Here is my final reason .Cell phone systems sometimes overload during major crisis attacks. Cell phone use by a large number of students at once could overpower and knock out cell phone systems quicker than may normally occur. Since cell phones are a communication tool for schools, student use in a crisis could prevent communications tools in a very short period of critical time. Therefore, I don’t think cell phones should be banned.

  2. I think that the school board SHOUD ban cell phones in school. My reasons for taking this position are one; cell phones are a distraction in our classes and can be used to take inappropriate pictures of our fellow classmates or teachers. Another reason to ban cell phone use in schools is that they can be used to call in a bomb threat from school and many times the phone can’t be traced. Cells phones have become a very important part of our society but I think they should not be used by students during school hours.

I think that it is a very bad idea to have cell phones in school, because if you are texting during class then you probably are not paying attention to the teacher. if you do not pay attention to the teacher while she is talking you might miss something that might be on a test, and that causes bad grades. and you could also be cheating with a cell phone because someone could text you awnsers or you could look at the internet on your cell phone and find the awnsers, and that is cheating! Cell phones may also disrupt classes and may be annoying. you could also use your camera on your cell phones to take pictures of the awnser key on a test and look at it during the test to cheat. sometimes people can even text bomb threats and some bombs can also be disguised as cell phones and that makes being able to have cell phones in school even more dangerous! That is why I believe cell phones should be banned!

  4. I think cell phones should not be aloud in school. Kids can use cell phones to cheat on tests, and text other people during class time. Also cell phones can cause kids to get into trouble with gangs and things like that. Cell phones can be helpful in the right place like the mall or store, but they are not safe to use during school.

  5. I THINK CELL PHONES SHOULD BE ALOUD IN SCHOOL BECAUSE IF THERE IS A CRISIS OR EMERGENCIE AT SCHOOL THEY SHLOUD BE ABLE TO HAVE THEM. THIS WAY STUDENTS CAN GET A HOLD OF THEIR PARENTS OR POLICE. CELL PHONES CAN HELP IN NUMEROUS WAYS. I THINK THE USE OF CELL PHONES IN SCHOOLS OUT WEIGHS BANDING THEM COMPLETLY. STUDENTS COULD CARYY THEIR CELL PHONES ON THEM DURING SCHOOL BUT HAVE THEM TURNED OFF. THEN STUDENTS COULD TURN THEM ON BEFORE AND AFTER SCHOOL AT LEAST, OR DURING AN EMERGENCY.

I know that you have many reasons why we should not ban cellular phones, for example if 9-1-1 happens again, but what if the bomb is disguised as a cellular phone? What would happen then, would we all be doomed? Also if you have your cell phone on during school then you could cheat or not be paying attention because someone could text you the answers or you could be more focused on sending a text than school. That is some of my reasons why we should ban cell phones!

  7. I think that the School shouldn’t ban cell phones from school because some people need to call there parents after school is over to tell them to go and get them from the school grounds also I believe that if a student can’t have a cell phone then a teacher shouldn’t because if they want us to use there phones then they should use there phones also. Some people might believe that cell phones are useless but in a bad situation someone can call for help like if there were a fire no one would think of using a cell phone if there banned from our school. Therefore I believe that the school shouldn’t ban cell phones.

       Ali Brennan — February 12, 2008 @ 1:30 pm

  8. I think the school board should not ban cell phones in school. My reasons for taking this position are: if a student needs to get ahold of their parents after school, they need a way to call them. And even though there is an office phone, there would be tons of kids lined up to call there parents. I think students should be able to have cell phones before and after school but not during classes. That way they won’t cheat in class, but they would be able to call their parents. If a student is caught with a cell phone in class i think the punishment should be more extreme than it is now. That way kids will stop using them in class.

  9. Responding to Brooke Schulstrom

There are many reasons of why cell phones should be band, but i don’t think a student could go on the internet very easyily in class because teachers are almost always walking around the classrooms which would make it very difficult to hide your phone. Bombs can be disquised as a cell phone but i don’t really think a kid would bring a bomb to school.

You have a lot of good reasons why cell phones should not be used in school, but they can server many good purposes during school hours. For example if there is ever an emergency you could use your cell phone to call home or the police station. Also cell phone could be turned off during class time. This way it would not be a distraction.

       Austin Markins — February 13, 2008 @ 12:54 pm

  12. Responding to Austin Markins:

You have a lot of good reasons why cell phones should be aloud in school, but I think they should not be aloud. Because cell phone could distract the teacher and students. Also cell phones could be used to cheat on tests, or take bad pictures.

  13. Responding to Brooke Shulstrom

Even though you say a cell phone can be disguised as a bomb what are the chances of that happening I mean who would do something that bad especially in Saline schools. Even though things like this happen in real life take a minute to think has this type of thing happened with a cell phone and any way if the power went out or something to where you cant use electricity and you need to call home but you don’t have any way of calling because you don’t have a cell phone.

       Ali Brennan — February 13, 2008 @ 1:44 pm

  14. I think that the school board SHOULD NOT ban cell phones from school. My reasons for taking this position are that cell phones help people because of when 9/11 happened people called the police from their cell phones for help. Also if there was an attack at school they would have their cell phone to get help. This is why I think they should keep cell phones in school.

       Abby M. — February 13, 2008 @ 4:32 pm

  15. Responding to Matt M.

You do have good reasons why cell phones should be banned, but I think we should have cell phones because if there is an emergency you could call someone to help. But you would also turn the cell phone off when school is in session. Cell phones also help us by if you need to call parent in case something bad happens in school.

       Abby M. — February 13, 2008 @ 4:53 pm

  16. Responding to Lauren P.

I disagree with Lauren because first the school board is not saying you can’t use them after school there just saying you can’t use them during school. Second, what’s the difference between elementary and middle school there not going to put you in any danger and every classroom has a phone. Those are my reason why I disagree with Lauren.

       matt — February 13, 2008 @ 5:56 pm

  17. Responding to Brooke S.

Although Brooke states a good point about having cell phones disguised as bombs, why would a studnet be carrying around a celluar bomb? The student probably would not know how it would work too. Also if cell phones could be bombs, how could you make it self distruct without killing youself or the person in use of it? And how you you set off the bomb without an adlut taking it away, it most likely would be ssen or heard. Therefore i still think that cell phones shouldn’t be banned from schools.

       Maddie M. — February 13, 2008 @ 6:34 pm

  18. I think that the school board SHOULD not ban cell phones in school. My reasons for taking this postion are that
when there is an emergency, like on September 11, 2001, the terrorist attack, bomb threats at school, when cell phone calls cannot
be traced by public safety officials, therefore students need to contact their parents. Cell phone systems sometimes overload during major crisis attacks.Cell phones used by
a large group of students at once could over power and knock out cell phone systems quicker that what normally occur. Since cell phones are also a communiction device for schools, student use in a crisis could prevent
communications in a short peroid of critical time. I also think that cell phones should be banned because of interuptions on classes, cheating on test and quizes, by sending answers to friends, or using the internet. Therefore I don’t think cell phones should be banned from school.

       Julia G. — February 13, 2008 @ 8:21 pm

  19. Responding to Brooke S.

Although Brooke states a good opinion about bombs in cell phones, who would be wanting to carry a bomb disguised as a cell [phone when it could go off at any minute, plus people can hear and see it when it goes off. Pretty much you would just be killing your self or the person who is using the phone. Therefore is still think that cell phones should not be banned.

       Julia G. — February 13, 2008 @ 8:29 pm

  20. I think that the school board should not ban cell phones in school. My reasons for taking this position are that if a parent needs to get a hold of their child if there is a crisis they have no way to if they don’t have a phone and if a student needs to get a hold of their parents after school they need a way to call them. And I think that kids should be able to have them before and after class but not during them so they couldn’t cheat. Even though some schools say that they banned them because of connection to drug and gang activity, as well as disruption to class. I don’t think this would be a problem if they were more strict like if students got in more trouble when go caught with their phone. This way it will teach the kids a lesson to stop bringing their phones to class and to tell them to leave them in their lockers.

       Marissa K. — February 14, 2008 @ 12:10 am

  21. Responding to Brooke S.

I think that Brooke has a good point about not listening to the teachers and why phones should be banned. But also i dont think that if someone did disguese a bomb as a phone it could most likely go off at any point in time so it could be hurting them as much as someone else. I also think that if someone had their phone totally out of their pocket to take a picture of the answers to somehting that a teacher could see it and get them in trouble.
So they would most likely not get away with it.And i dont think a middle schooler would bring a bomb to school.

       Marissa K. — February 14, 2008 @ 12:23 am

  22. I think they should not ban cell phones at saline middle school and all the other schools. I think this because what if there was an emergency and teachers couldn’t get to their phone or the power is out the students could use their cell. On a nother note middle school is suppose to be fun and some students cell phones are their life its pretty sad that some students cell phones are their life but its true. There are plenty of reasons they should be ban cell phones but don’t take the fun away thier are more students than teachers and i think the students all feel the same way and the teachers vote is over ruled.

       marisa p — February 14, 2008 @ 3:59 pm

  23. I think that cell phones should be able to be turned on during lunch periods. We are not learning in lunch so it is ok. but kids who are not in lunch can have there phones off then turn them on in lunch and check there texts or calls that other students sent them in there lunch period. and if we have freedom of them, we will not abuse that privilage.

       Sydney G. — February 14, 2008 @ 4:01 pm

  25. Responding to Mackenzie i agree with your statement about using our cells in school if there is a power out. it would be useful to call our parents cells if there was any ermergency were the phone lines were dead. it is a very good point and it makes a lot of sense.

       Sydney G. — February 14, 2008 @ 4:04 pm

  26. RESPONSE:

I think sydney has a good point we are not learning during lunch so its not like were going to txt each other answers. Were not learning were eating and what if your mom left you a vociemail telling you not to take the bus home because she wasn’t there to take you to dance or soming. than you would be in trouble you wouldn’t have a ride.

       marisa p — February 14, 2008 @ 4:05 pm

  27. I think that the school board shouldn’t ban cell phones in school. First, I feel that students in 7th and 8th grade should be mature enough to obey the rules. If they choose to disobey the rules they should be punished and held responsible for their actions. Students should have their phones turned off and in their lockers during school hours. Students should only use their phones before and after school. Secondly, students that have activities after school need the phones to communicate with their families; many times activities after school can run over or be cancelled. If a teacher sees a phone out they should be able to take it away and then the student’s privileges, of cell phone use, also be taken away for a specific length of time.

       Tyler B. — February 14, 2008 @ 7:43 pm

  28. I do not think that the school board should ban cell phones for many reasons. First of all, there are saftey issues. For example, during the September 11, incident, students complained that it was hard for them to contact their parents because all of the pay phones were in use. Also, during the Columbine High School in 1999, there were shootings going on in that school that killed and hurt teachers and students. When the students had their cell phones they could stay in touch with there families. That is why cell phones would be useful in that situation. Another reason is that bomb threats have been called in on cell phones, so students could save themselves from those threats. That is my opinion on why schools should not ban cell phones.

       Rachel G. — February 14, 2008 @ 7:51 pm

  29. I agree with Lauren because if they were to ban cell phones in school the kids would be lined up in the office after school. Also if you left a message on your mother’s phone there would be no way that she could respond to you directly.

       Tyler B. — February 14, 2008 @ 7:52 pm

  30. Responding to Hassan n.

I agree with you on how kids can get in trouble for using cell phones in class, but I don’t agree with you on how kids can cheat on tests using their cell phones. For example,I don’t think that a kid would be able to use their phone to cheat, because a teacher would notice that happening, especially during a test.

       Rachel G. — February 14, 2008 @ 8:09 pm

  31. I think that the school board should not ban cell phones in school. My reasons for thaking this position are…. In the first artical they made a good piont you should have them in case of a teroist attack. And what if you need to be picked up from football or some sport practice. During the fooball season i lended my cell phone countless times to people cause no one was picking them up. Plus no one is stuiped enough to us a cell phone and cheat on school work cause cell phone operate farly slow the calculator is very confusing and you would surly get caut using your cell phone. It takes so long. Also geting your cell phone stolen is your falt you have a locker that locks no one can get in onless you tell someone your comb. Also somtimes some peoples lockers don’t lock just dubble check to make sur it locked. I think it would be a very bad idea to ban cell phones in school.

       Clayton K — February 14, 2008 @ 10:07 pm

  32. I agree with marissa because kids should have ther cell phone in case of crisis alos some on else made a good piont if kids didnt have cell phones they would be lined up in class and in the office tring to call the parents.

       Clayton K — February 14, 2008 @ 10:13 pm

  33. I agree with marissa because kids should have ther cell phone in case of crisis alos some on else made a good piont if kids didnt have cell phones they would be lined up in class and in the office tring to call the parents.thats why i agree with marrisa on the cell phone banding.

       Clayton K — February 14, 2008 @ 10:15 pm

  34. I think that the school board should not band cell phones. I think this because if a kid has to get a hold of someone they could be able to call them. Teachers say that you can use the office phone but the office is not open all the time. Like for after school activities it is not open at like 4:30-5:00 and you would have no way of calling someone to pick you up. A lot of people are saying that people are texting in class but the teachers don’t even know. The teacher should be stricter if they hear a cell phone or if some kid is looking in to their pockets and not paying attention, what else do the teachers think they are doing they need to know what they are doing. A staff member should not confiscate the phone before school hours or after, only during school if they see it. One other, thing in class some kid’s phone has rang in dead silence and the teacher did not hear it; they probably were not even paying attention to the class. If a staff member were to confiscate a cell phone they should make the parents come in to get so they know that their kid was using their cell phone when they were not allowed. That is why I think kids should be able to have cell phones at school , but the teachers need to pay attention to kids who are clearly not paying attention and if someone’s phone goes off they need to recognize what they are doing.

       caitlin E. — February 14, 2008 @ 10:46 pm

  35. Responding to Brook S

I know that you think we should not have cell phones in school but what if some thing new came up you would have to contact someone to make sure that they know your plans. In your blog you mentioned cheating, unless the kids had seen the right answers on the test key the would not know if it was right or wrong and if you do have a camera on your phone, you have not seen the test yet, so how do you know what to take pictures of for the answers. The bomb thing, people can get a hold of what you text and that is why you don’t ever text any thing important or secret because other people can read what you wrote, so any one dumb enough to do that probaly don’t know that you can get caught.

       caitlin E. — February 14, 2008 @ 10:59 pm

  36. There are a few reasons why we should not have phones in school, but I think we should have what we have now, with being able to have them in school but not using them.
Because what would happen in there was another major terrorist attack like the one on 9-11 or if there was another school shooting if we didn’t have cell phones there would be many more lives lost then if our parents had a way of contacting use or use contacting them. That is my opinion of this topic>

       Ben P. — February 16, 2008 @ 10:15 am

  37. Responding to Matt M.

I disagree with matt because although he does have a point about them being a distraction in class why would a student call in a bomb threat on their school because then the student would be killed and also almost every cell phone can be traced with no problem at all that is why I disagree with matt.

       Ben P. — February 16, 2008 @ 10:29 am

  38. I think that the school board should not ban cell phones. Kids should be able to use cell so you can talk to family members during a crises and can help you tell your parents that you are okay or not and it can let you talk to your parents when your last words are being spoke and they can talk to and tell them they love them. Also kids might see a kid with a weapon and the kid is in between classes and could call police and tell them about the kid with the weapon. The chance of a attack is very small so it would be a good idea to have cell phones and use them just like a fire drill and drill them just like a emergence.

       Alex C — February 19, 2008 @ 12:39 pm

  39. Responding to Tyler B

Isn’t the reason that they might ban cell phones is that they are stolen even more than ipod not just because they are used when you are not supposed to? I mean that the lockers at our school can be opened with out a com and be stolen even easier than now and I would rather have my cell phone in the hands of a teacher I know than some kid who opened my locker and took my stuff.

       Alex C — February 19, 2008 @ 1:18 pm

  40. I think that they should bane cellphones because one they are a distration to the class and when they go off people look at them and say “what was that” and then they get in trouble two people are having trouble even to stop and text in class to a other stundents.

       cole G — February 22, 2008 @ 12:18 pm

  41. You have a lot of good reasons to have but do you really want all this people to start to just text all day in school and to be distraced all the time be contanct ringers.

       cole G — February 22, 2008 @ 12:23 pm

  42. I think cell phones shouldn’t be banned in school but banned during class. I think they should be banned during
class because people can text across the room answers to a test or homework and that would be cheating.
I think they should be allowed in the halls in between classes, before, and after school. They should be
    allowed during those times because students often need to get ahold of their parents for many reasons;
they may need some homework they forgot at home, need a ride after school, need something from home for
private reasons that the school may not provide for you or that you want to get. But if students get caught texting/talking in class with their cell phones they should have them taken away for the rest of the day therefor they wont have them in the halls in between classes.

       Sydney F — February 22, 2008 @ 5:11 pm

  43. I agree with you on banning them during class, because they are a big distraction when they aren’t on silent when people ask what was that and get off task. But i also think that students should be able to have them on them for inbetween classes and after school.

       Sydney F — February 22, 2008 @ 5:13 pm

  44. I think that the school board should ban cell phones in school. My reasons are that students can use them to send texts and pictures of tests and quiz’s to other kids to help them cheat. Students can take personal pictures of other kids and post them on the Internet or share them with friends. also it interrupts important class lessons. thats why cell phones should be banned.

       Christina B. — March 27, 2008 @ 4:22 pm

  45. I agree with Sydney F. about banning them JUST for class. If you only have them on for before and after school, lunch and breaks that gives the students a little bit of freedom. But absolutely banning them during class because of all the distractions.
