I think banning cell phones is a bad idea. What happens when a student is staying after in a school sport and it gets canceled and their parents don’t even know that it is canceled and then what. The student is going to have to stay there for 2 or more hours. And I read in one of the articles that some schools require to carry cell phones for there safety because of the terrorist attack on September 2001. Also if they have an emergency like sickness or something
I think banning cell phones is a bad idea. What happens when a student is staying after in a school sport and it gets canceled and their parents don’t even know that it is canceled. The student is going to have to stay there and do nothing for 2 or more hours. I read in one of the articles that some schools require students to carry cell phones for there safety because of the terrorist attack on September 11, 2001.Also if they have an emergency likes sickness or something or a bomb threat or any kind of threat
I think we should totally keep cell phones in school. There’s a huge market coming out where parents can set kids’ phones to only dial to their parents in case of an emergency. Besides, why should we care if kids are taking the risk to get their cell phones stolen or taken away? I also agree with Mitchell’s theory. What if an after-school event gets canceled? If we put the program into their phones, kids wouldn’t have to stay after longer.
I don’t think they should ban cell phones because kids need safety from threats, kidnapers or anything like that. Another reason that they should not ban cell phones because kids that stay after in school might not be able to call their parents so they might be stuck in school. Another reason that schools should not band cell phones are because of an emergency if they need help or are hurt.
I agree with Brian because if kids lose there cell phones that’s their fault and kids should have to deal with losing their phones if they can have them in school.
I think the school board SHOULD NOT ban cell phones. My reasons for taking this position are as follows: First, kids who have after school activities (such as football or basketball) will need to be able to contact their parents so the kid can get picked up. This way, kids will be able to be safe and out of harms way from any strangers, all because of a call from their cell phone.
Another reason is not text messaging, but as an emergency use. For example, during the September 11 attack, there were tons of school districts in New York City that had a “no cell phone use” policy. Because of that policy, many kids had no cell phones. Well during the attack, many people were rushing to nearby public phones so they can call their family members and tell them they had to get picked up, are leaving early from work, etc. Unfortunately, the kids in the school districts were in jeopardy because they had no one to call. This put many students’ parents in worry.
I know that there are some kids brave enough to take their cell phones to classes. And there are kids who are even braver enough to have their cell phones on during classes. Let me just say that those kids have no common sense. Besides, only a handful of kids do that (I hope). My final statement about cell phones is: that cell phone use is a privilege, and kids who misuse cell phones are the ones that shouldn’t have them period.
I agree with Hunter that banning cell phones is a bad idea because cell phones can help keep from harm. Kidnappers are everywhere now-a-days and strangers (or predators) are dangerous, too. I think Hunter makes a lot of great points in his paragraph, so I therefore stay on the side for cell phones in school.
I am in the middle because people text and call people during school and do not pay attention in class, but people need to call their parents after school.
I think that the school board SHOULDN’T ban cell phones in school. My reasons for taking this position is as follows: One, most parents want their kids to be able to call them in case of an emergency, like the terrorist attack of 2001. Also, kids can contact their parents after school, telling them to pick them up where and when. Also, kids are also smuggling cell phones in to the schools, which is even worse then just letting them bring them.
During 9/11, many kids didn’t have cell phones because of the ‘no cell phones’ policy at the schools. The kids said it was hard to contact their parents during the attack because all of the pay phones were being used by all the students who couldn’t bring cell phones. If the school board had just let them bring phones to school, then things would have been a lot safer.
In conclusion, cell phones should be aloud in schools. If a teacher sees one, they should confiscate it, but isn’t the safety of it in emergencies worth it? I think cell phones should be aloud in schools, it’s just safer that way.
~Lindsay W.
I agree with Lindsay. If we ban cell phones, it’s sorta like we’re banning safety. Can you imagine, after 9/11, kids running around, crowding around every pay phone? I think it just MIGHT be a little easier if we were allowed to have cell phones.
I think that we should keep cell phones because if there was enenmergusy or you have a change of plans like you cant stay after school or some thing we to be able to contact are parents. So baning cell phones is a bad idea for safety ishuse
I disagree with Taylor G. (Sec 3). I believe that just because some kids text during class doesn’t mean all do. I believe the safety of children in emergencies is more important then a few people to text their friends. It will come in handy in case of an emergency, and everyone will be thankful they have phones.
~Lindsay W.
Taylor G is in Sec 2, sorry!
~Lindsay W.
I think that the school board should not ban cell phones. My reasons for thinking this position are the importance of making sure parents can contact you after school and that we could contact them in case of a emergency. Many schools have reconsidered cell phones because of the parents. Another reason is safety, because people feel safer when they have them with them. Some schools require students to carry them because of a terrorist attack. I do not think cell phones should be banned completely, but should be turned off in school. Some people think cell phones are a distraction, but I think they are a necessity. I do not think the school board should ban cell phones.
I think that the school board SHOULD’NT ban cell phones in school. My reasons for taking this position is many parents want to know that there kids are always safe. For example in New York City a kid says “My mother, she needs me to have the cell to call me and check up on me,” said Steven Cao. On September 11th kids would swarm the pay phones to call relatives. If we ever had a situation where the students weren’t safe cell phones would come in handy then. “There are valid reasons for kids to have cell phones,” says Ned Waterhouse, deputy superintendent of schools for Loudon County, Virginia. He also states that the kids may only use there cell phones before and after school. Ned has a good point of keeping the kids from cheating in class and you would only have to use your phone before and after school where your parents will feel that you’re safe. I think the schools in New York City have taken the cell phone use to far by having detectors to see if you have and cell phones. Banning cell phones is a mistake. There is a reason cell phones were invented and one of those reasons are for safety!
~Caitlin C.
I agree with Casey’s statement that cell phones are a privilege, and those who abuse that privilege should not use them. Someone who uses it for emergencies and respects that privilege should not be punished. Also I agree that there are a lot of weird people out there and they should have it in case of emergencies, and students that have after school activities need to contact there parents. Therefore I support Casey’s statement of not banning cell phones in school.
I disagree with Taylor G. she states that cells phones should be banned because kids are texting answers and cheating during classes. I feel cheating is bad too but when you think about banning all cell phones from every student it’s basically impossible. The school system has always told us safety is first but taking cell phones is saying the school system lied to us because cell phones are keeping us safe.
I think the school board should and should not ban cell phones in school. My reasons for taking this position is after school kids need to call their parents after school. They should ban them because kids call people and text people in the middle of the day.
i agree with hunter that we should keep cell phones in school cause that kids have after school sports and they need to tell their parents that they are staying. If a teacher see a kid with a phone they should take it from them but give it to them after school is over so if they need to call their parents.
I don’t think that the school should ban cell phones. I think that because if kids have after school activities and they were cancled, how would they tell their parents? Also if they had to call a friend to do a pjoject after school you wouldn’t be able to without a cell phone. Most of the kids need to do those kinds of things after school. So again I don’t think that the school should ban cell phones.
Jamie S.
I think the school board should NOT BAN cell phones. My reason for thinking this position are the importance of making sure parents have contact with there kids after school because mabey after school sports get cut short or something, also they can miss there busses. its important for parent knowing that there children are safe. the only thing is i think people should have there phones turned off in classes so the pay more attension. like i read in one article is that they were getting to destracted with there cell phone that they wornt paying attension in class but that doesnt mean you have to ban them because thats not even 1/4 of the school. 1 last reason, i think they should not ban cell phones is because someschools allow the kids to carry them in school of safety again just incase of a terrorist attack.
I feel that kids should still be allowed to use cell phones in school, but teachers need to be stricter about kids using them in school. Kids should be able to take them to school in case of an emergency of an after school plan is canceled. Another reason is during the 9/11 kids were all panicked and cramming the pay phones to try and call relative because New York schools had banned all cell phones. Kids should be able to have cell phones but there should be a strict rule about keeping them turned of during school hours. All kids should be aware that if a teacher see/hears or think they see/hear your cell phone they have permission to confiscate it. So In the end I think kids should have cell phones in school, but the schools need to enforce the no cell phones on during school rule.
(Sorry I had to redo the first line.)
I feel that kids should still be allowed to use cell phones before and after school only, but teachers need to be stricter about kids using them in school. So In the end I think kids should have cell phones in school, but the schools need to enforce the no cell phones on during school rule.
i disagree with taylor G because not everyone messes aroung with there phone. its most likely there paying attension in class because teachers usually walk around the class so the teachers would usually ketch them or that means that they do it fast and they rarely text. plus phones need to be with kids for safety issues.
I think that the the school board SHOULDN’T ban cell phones in school. Even if they make this rule it would be very hard to follow through on. What if a student had an after school activity, was going home with a friend to finish school work, or had to stay at school to retake a test?
Some days sports and after school activites may be canceled. Kids would be forced to stay after school for a long time because there would be no way to contact parents.
In some of the articles it talked about people texting the answers for a test. I think that is a seperate problem, it has nothing to do with phones. If people didnt have phones they would pass the answers on paper. So that is a whole seperate problem.
Another issue is the fact of safety. What if something like 911 happened again, all the articles mentioned? What if there was an intruder and someone needed to call the police. Think, cell phones could definitly be helpful.
So, please, don’t ban cell phones!
I agree with Lauren P, section four. She has very good point. I think students should be able to use cell phones out of class, not in. And espesially NOT during tests/pop quiz’s.
I think that the school board shouldn’t ban cell phones in school. My reasons for taking this position are that many parents I’ve read about feel better if their kid has one. Kids and parents like the ability to keep in contact with each other so they can inform each other in changes of a schedule, such as if a after school sport is canceled, or if the kid was planning on staying after school with a teacher and the school has decided to not let anyone stay after school because of weather hazards.
In Saline Area Schools, I think that cell phones should be aloud anytime before the 2nd morning bell rings, lunch hour, and at 2:37 when the final school bell rings. It wouldn’t be a good idea to allow them in the hallways between classes because it could cause students to be late to class. But, I think they should be allowed on the students at all times as long as they are off and they shouldn’t be used because it would distract their class. Also, they are DEFINATELY not
allowed during tests or quizzes.
Cell phones should still be allowed in school, but just not out in class.
I disagree with Libby B. The students should still call their parents if they are aware of a terrorist attack, not so the the parent comes to pick them up from school, but to let them know that the school is(hopefully) planning a way around problems like these and even if if was safe enough to come quickly pick up their kid, then they should to keep them from harm. And, if the kid is safe after they tell their parents about the attack, then it would relieve their parents to know that they are safe all because of a phone call.
hey mrs.boss, this is reed carlson from last year….im helping kaleigh on her blog so if it sucks its her fault!!…bye see you soon

I think that the school board shouldn’t ban cell phones in school because if there was a emergency we would need to contact are parents. Also if there a change of plans we needed to be picked up somewhere else, we could contact them. But the downside is that if they go off in class, we get in trouble.
I agree with Gabby that the school board should not ban cell phones because of safety.
I think that cellphones SHOULD be banned from being able to carry them around with you. If you just leave them in your locker though it is fine. I always leave my phone in my locker beacuse if you look at the pros and cons of having it on you what is there? Pros- …
Cons- It could get it taken away, it might get stolen, and you might break it. Sure they’re great for before and after school, but you don’t really NEED them then either. Obviosly you might want them, but you don’t NEED them. I am ready to be disagreed with though so bring it on!
I disagree with Jamie that you need your cellphone after school if your practice/activity gets cancelled. You could definantly just go to A) the office, B) a teacher, or C) your coach. They all have phones on them or in their room. I’m interested to hear your reasoning for this from anyone. Because I’m kind of confused at your point, but there might be a good reason for it that I just skipped over.
I think our school shouldn’t ban cellphones because they are vital for parents to contact their kids. In the article about the ban on cellphones in the New York schools it said that even though cellphones are banned they’re still smuggled into school. Plus the schools would have a lot of angry parents who might even take their kid out of school. I think that banning cellphones would create more problem than it solves.
To argue with myself I think cellphones shold be banned from school because they can be really disruptive. People could be text messaging in class and not be paying attention. Or someone could take a picture of a test to send to a friend so the friend knows what the questions are like in the article about why cellphones should be banned. They could also be used to take bad pictures and stuff. Also when they go off it’s realy disruptive to a class. Cellphones are really important for contacting parents but they shouldn’t be allowed to be used in school.
I think that the school board should not ban cell phones in school. I think that as the article I read, Schools, States Review Cell Phone Bans, said, the use of cell phone are wanted by many parents for safety’s sake. Cell phones should be allowed as long as they are not used during school hours. I think that it is ok for a teacher to confiscate a student’s cell phone if it is used during class, but not after school hours. For safety, a way to contact someone in emergency, and just for communication, cell phones should not be banned.
I am going to argue with myself, because I can’t seem to find someone to argue with, because students need to pay attention in class. Parents/guardians and students should already have their ride arrangements set up, and if we need to call our parents for rides in emergencies, the office could just call all the parents/guardians. The rule of no cell phone use in class is either not strict enough, or not being enforced because I myself have seen kids texting during class. The use of cell phone is too disruptive during school, and kids complain about their cell phones being stolen. The way to fix all of that is to ban cell phones.
I think that the school board should not ban cell phones in school. My reasons for thaking this position are…. In the first artical they made a good piont you should have them in case of a teroist attack. And what if you need to be picked up from football or some sport practice. During the fooball season i lended my cell phone countless times to people cause no one was picking them up. Plus no one is stuiped enough to us a cell phone and cheat on school work cause cell phone operate farly slow the calculator is very confusing and you would surly get caut using your cell phone. It takes so long. Also geting your cell phone stolen is your falt you have a locker that locks no one can get in onless you tell someone your comb. Also somtimes some peoples lockers don’t lock just dubble check to make sur it locked. I think it would be a very bad idea to ban cell phones in school.
I think cell phones should be banned from schools. Not only are they disruptive to class, but students can use them to cheat on tests and projects. Even if the student needs to contact the parent or vice versa, there are phones in every classroom and in the office. Also, the only things cell phones are going to do in school is get stolen.
I disagree with Jake P.(sec. 4). I think that if an after school activity is cancled, the coaches and everyone else would know too so they probably would have left by then. Yeah there could be a random teacher walking around with a cell phone on them, but the chances of that always happening isn’t that great. So overall I think that kids shouldn’t have their cell phones in class, but in their locker. After school is over though I think the kids have all the rights to use thier cell phone to call somebody or do whatver they want to do because after schools over the teachers don’t have much power then.
Jamie S.
I think that Saline Schools should NOT BAN CELL PHONES! Even though i dont have a cell phone[cause my parents are mean] I dont think that we should ban cell phones. I say this because almost everyday I use one of my friends phones to contact one of my parents to ask to go to after school activities or go over to my friends houses to finish up projects. If we didnt have cell phones then I couldnt go to after school activities or call my parents to ask if I could go to my friends house to finish up a project. Therefore it would be unfare for me or my partner because they would have to do the project on their own.
My other reasons for not banning cell phones are safety. If Saline banned phones then parnts couldnt call thier kids to ask where they are after school. It just isnt safe with all the psychos running around these days.
I disagree with Kayla K. Even if the students need to notify their parents of changes, they can call them using one of the school phones. If they miss their bus, they can just use the office phone, like I sometimes do.
I agree greatly with all the things Casey S. said. Casey brought up a good fact that cell phones are a responsibility and if you use them during class then they should be taken away. But, there are only a couple of kids stupid enough to bring phones into class. I also agree with Casey that we need cell phones to call our parents if you have any after school activity like basketball to come and pick you up.
My opinion on cell phones is that it should stay the way the school has written the rules. Cell phones are to be turned off and kept in lockers during classes. The rules themselves are fine, but the students don’t always do as they say. I think that an alternative could be that the teachers do checks during classes, and if a student has his/her cell phone that it be confiscated for a day or two and the child in question should phone home to inform the parents.
I agree with Jamie that cell phones should be allowed in case kids need to call home, or something big occors. An example of this happened to me. Last year my school had the entire 6th grade go to outdoor education in coach buses. On the return trip, one of the buses(MINE!) broke down. And the only cell phones on teh bus were the teachers, because the school had banned cell phones from the trip. The cells ended up dying before all the parents could be reached, and another bus didn’t arive until we had been sitting in the stifling heat for almost an hour.
I agree with banning cell phones because there are phones in the school you don’t need your own. If something were to happen your parents or whoever could call the school to get you. If you neeede to call your parents you could do that. I think it is not right to sneak your cell phones into the building if you are not aloud because you should listen to them. They don’t know what you are doing and don’t know if you are paying attention to them. You would not be learning as much. But if you were to bring your cell phone they should stay in your locker and be turned off in class.
~ Ashley K.
I agree with Hannah because cell phones should not be in class. They should be the rules of the school and they should follow them. The teachers should check to make sure they are turned off and not in the class room. That would distract the students and make it a bad learning environment. The teachers should then contact there parents or give a warning so it does not happen again. The schools should let the students to use them after school to get a hold of there parents.
~ Ashley K.
I also agree that cellphones should be aloud but not in the class room. There has been bad situations that have happened and the schools would not want them to happen again, so that could be why some schools bane cell phones.
(Sorry its lete I had a brain fart and forgot all about it, please count this as a late assignment.)
I agree with Ashley that phones should be aloud in school but not in the classroom for the same reasons. Cell phones in class are bad fr a learning enviorment. Teachers should definatlly be strickter about making sure students do not have there cell phones with them in class at all.
I think that the kids in Saline Middle School should be able to have cell phones, because we all need a way to call home or someone to pick you up after school. And if you have to use the school phones ever day they would get upset. They say you should already have your plns done when you get to school. But people should not be able to use them in class, but after or before school. So yes i believe that they should ont ban cell phones for any reasons.
I believe schools should deffenately NOT ban cell phones. Don’t agree? Think about this, it’s a regular day and out of nowhere, a terror attack begins in downtown Ann Arbor. All of the kids at school are scared! The teacher decide to send the kids home as soon as possible. So, kids are repeatedly asking to us the school’s phone but all the lines are full. What are you going to do? Use your cell phone! If we don’t have our cellphones, it’s just another risk on a teens life. There are many other reasons teens would need their cellphones such as after school a stranger is following them or they get hurt on their way to school, or even the school’s power goes out and we need to get home. Their aren’t enough phones for over 400 teens. Think about it.
I would have to agree with Savannah on how teens need their cellphones after school to call home. If their plans change and they missed the bus, they need to have a way to call their parents to come pick them up.
