I think that schools SHOULD NOT ban cell phones from entering the school. I took this position because I believe that cell phones should be allowed for safety reasons and for contacting parents. If the US happens to get attacked like in 2001 we don’t know where it will occur and we don’t want to make the same mistake some schools in New York made when they banned cell phones in school. If they would have allowed cell phones in school, after/during the attack students could have contacted their families. However,I don’t think that students should be allowed to text or make phone calls DURING classes(except in major emergencys-like in 2001), so perhaps if cell phones are seen during the day they should be taken away and the student should get a detention. I also know that we have the issue of cell phones getting stolen during the school day, but i belive that if the student wants to risk getting their cell phone stolen by taking it to school that is their own problem, not the schools.
I believe that the school board SHOULD NOT ban cell phones from school. I believe this because cell phones can be used for safety. It would help parents at work to know if their kids made it home safely from school. It could also help parents know if their kid’s after school activities were canceled or if they just simply missed the bus. Many parents also think cell phones in school are a good idea because if something like September eleventh or a school shooting happened, kids would have a way to contact their parents. Even though I think that students should be allowed to have cell phones in school I think there should still be some rules to limit when they are used. In some schools cell phones have been banned because students have been caught taking pictures of exams and sending it to friends or taking pictures of people in gym locker rooms, so if there are rules, stuff like that is less likely to happen. I believe that it is not necessary to ban cell phones from schools, but have more restrictions against them.
I don’t think that schools should ban cell phone usage in schools. I think this because; like they said in the CBS article the kids need to keep in touch with their parents. Another reason why they should not is because are they honestly going to launch a terrorist attack on Saline. And if there is a terrorist attack on Saline (which there won`t be) students need to be able to contact their parents as they said in the education world article.
I think that schools SHOULD NOT ban cell phones from the schools. I took this position because I think all kids should cell phones for safety reasoning. One example of this is September 11th (9/11). In case of a family need or a medical need the kids should be able to contact there parent as soon as possible. Also if the parent needs to reach there child if the office takes to long to find out what class the child is in. As I read that cell phones are not safe article I thought that they are just as safe with a cell phone and with out one. That is what i think and feel about having cell phones in school.
I agree with Mitchell S. Because if you had to stay after school one day but your parents did not know how would you tell them. If you had a cell phone all you have to do is call your mom or dad off your cell phone and tell them not to pick you up or what ever. Or even if a sport was canceled.
I agree with Chris, what if a student needs to contact parents for family or medical needs? I believe it is important for kids to be able to bring their cellphones to school. Also, like Chris stated, if a parent needs to contact their student the office might take a long time to connect them, so instead a parent can just call their child. Not only that, but a parent can now where the student is at all times. Again I will say that the Saline Schools District should not ban children from bringing their cellphones to school.
I think that the school board should not ban cell phones. My reasons for taking this position would be because if a student needed to contact a parent or adult in an emergency they would have their cell phone with them. Also in the article I read, it said that some kids or students were having trouble reaching their parents due to all of the public phones being used and they werent allowed to carry cell phones. If a student in the school needed to contact a parent immediately and all the phones were being used they should have the right to use their cell phone. Some parents want their kids to have cell phones because of emergencies that could happen, so its for the students own safety. In conclusion, I stongly think that the school board should not ban cell phones.
I agree with Lauren. It would be helpful if parents knew if school activities got canceled or something similar to that. I also believe what Lauren is saying is right about having more restrictions on cell phones but still allowing them in school. A few more rules should be made on cell phones like if you have a cell phone and its on during an exam, test, quiz it should be turned off so people cant cheat in any way.
I think that the schools should ban cell phone use. My reasons for taking this position are I quote from the FOX news students are distracting the students from doing there work by texting each other they miss what the teacher is saying. Another reason I think this is because students can take pictures of tests answers and send them to other people. This is what I think about the use of cell phones neither in class nor at school.
I disagree with Luke because if there was a terrorist at the school and the kids called there would be parents coming and that would put more people in danger. The cell phone use can also bring grades down because people don’t listen to the teacher.
I don’t think we should ban cell phones my reasons are that what if you are in a emergency and you need to call your parents. when in class we should turn them off because they are a distraction to most people causing them to stop learning and start texting their friends. a quote from CBS “My mother, she needs me to have the cell to call me and check up on me,” said Steven Cao. what if theres another school shooting we could call are parents and tell them that we’re being attack or call he police. http://www.cbsnews.com/stories/2006/05/12/national/main1616330.shtml
I disagree with Libby because what if there was a terrorist and he did start shooting and what would we do without are cell phones to call the police because we could get killed just by hiding and trying to not get killed with no one an the way to save us. which i still think we should keep cell phones with us because of the threats that are happening in the world right now.
I disagree with Libby because what if there was a terrorist and he did start shooting and what would we do without are cell phones to call the police because we could get killed just by hiding and trying to not get killed with no one an the way to save us. which i still think we should keep cell phones with us because of the threats that are happening in the world right now. If we do ban cell phones people will still find a way to get them into the school causing more trouble and use of their cell phones.
I think that schools SHOULD NOT ban cells phones completely but I do think that they should prohibit use during the school day. I think this because parents should be able to contact their children in case of emergencies, change of plans, and the need of a sense of relief that their children can contact them. Another reason cell phones should not be banned is that there are so many students on a team and such a small amount of phones in the school. If an emergency does occur or school is cut short (like in 2005) it will take lots of time to have the 120 students on our team contact their parents on just 4 phones. Again I strongly believe we should not ban cell phones.
I disagree with Libby because she stated that kids will be distracted if they use their cell phones in class and I feel that cell phones are one of the least distractions. There are so many other things that could disrupt a class and cell phones are way down on the list. If a student decides to text in class they are jeopardizing their own grades and they should know better. I feel if a student is caught texting the teacher should confiscate the cell phone and if it happens again they should contact the child’s parents. This is what many schools have opted for instead of banning cell phones and I think it works just as well. Again I would like to say that I am against banning cell phones.
I agree with Tabby that we should NOT ban cell phones. Of course if they are out in class they should be taken and punishment will be settled but if there is an activity cancelled after school or something, what will they do? Students who do not have cell phones should bring some quarters to school just in case. So turn your phones off during school and keep them in your locker and they wont be stolen or banned from schools.
I disagree with Libby on banning cell phones. They should be kept in lockers but if the student decides to take their cell phone around they should be aware that their grades can be lowered and they can get detentions. They should be confiscated but not BANNED. Texting is not really a distraction as much as daydreaming or talking. There is so many ways for a student to get distracted so there is no reason why the students who dont text during school but keep their cellphones in their lockers. So cell phones should NOT be banned.
I think that the school board SHOULD NOT ban cell phones in school. I think this because like many people have said and CBS News said, that parents want their children to have their cell phones with them in case of an emergency (for the sake of safety). Also, parents need to know things like when sports practices are cancelled, or when they miss their bus, or when their children just want to go home with a friend. But I do deffinately think that if they are seen or caught using them in class that the teachers should have the right to take them away from the student for a period of time or have a punishment. I think that we should deffinately try to cut back on the texting during classes and only let kids have them on before and after school like the Loudon County decided on.
Like Tabby said there is the risk of them being stolen, but if they are going to risk bringing them then they should understand if they get stolen. But maybe if like the school is going to let kids bring them to school and they have to many stolen phones THEN MAYBE they have the right to ban them.
Yes, Libby it can be a major distraction but maybe if kids know theres a rather big punishment, maybe they wont be so stubburn and use them during class when they should be paying attention.
I think that the school board SHOULD NOT ban cell phone use. I think that because yes they’re a distraction in class but just like in 9/11 if there was a attack at our school we would need to call our parents. Along with that I their child has to stay after or a practice was cancelled.
But along with Libby if people were attacking and our parents came they would be in trouble.
I dont think schools should ban cell phones for a couple of reasons. For starters you need to be able to contact your parents in case of emergancys. And also kids need to learn responceability and why not start with cell phones!
I do not belive that cell phones should be banned, because if needed they can save lives and also if we have them at our disposil there is no reason not to use them. Although I am fairly imparial I don’t believe we should not be able to use them. As long as they are OFF during class since they are a distraction but after an before school we should use them. Heck in order to make sure they are not used in class teachers could have a bin for cell phones, and if anyone takes advantage of the privelage and do text then hey should not be allowed to evr have i in class again. Thanks for listening uur uuum reading MmKay bYe!

I completely agree with Antonio because parents need to now whats going on with heir kids and also that responsibility is very important and cell phones teach that very well. MmKay bYe!
I don’t think cell phones should be banned at Saline Middle School. I think students need to have cell phones to be able to contact their parents when they need too. It’s easier to use a cell phone because you can have your parents on speed dial. The phones in the office are sometimes being used by others or the student may not remember emergency numbers when needed. I don’t think Saline Middle School should ban cell phones in our schools.
I agree with Brad because he thinks that Saline Middle School shouldn’t ban cell phones.
I disagree with Alexis because I think cell Phones should not be ban. I say this because the kid should be able to contact their parent. And they help us learn responseabillity. Plus we have to learn when its ok and not ok to use them
Yes, students should have cell phones in school. The students shouldn’t use the phones in class. If we didn’t have cell phones, the office would be very crowded. Students would also miss the bus if they had to use the office phone. It is a good idea to have cell phones in school but not during class.
I like what Anthony said about having parents on speed dial. It’s a good idea to have your phone with you so you can call your parents.
I think that the school board SHOULD not ban cell phones in school. My reasons for thaking this position are….because if you walking home or something happens and you can call a friend or parent.
I believe that cell phones should not be banned from school. There are many reasons why we should ban them, but a novel of reasons why we should not. For instance, if there were ever a sort of emergengy or any other eargent need such as a blackout when all school phones die, us kids use use are cells to call home. Another reason we should not ban all cell phone privlages from school is the fact that after school kids don’t wan to run down to the office to call home when they can have there pdone in there backpacks. That concludes my examples for why we should not band cell phones from Saline Middle School!!!
I am responding to Marissa P.
I agree 100% that teachers and staff opinions are not the only ones that count. If they were I am sure this school would be as good. So I think that these vlogs should be agnoleged. Again agreeing with Marissa, do not take our fun away!!!
I agree with Tabby, I DO NOT think the school board should ban cell phones. In the 9/11 attack they said it was very hard to let children get in touch with their parents because the cell phones were banned. I don’t think that children should have their cell phones turned on in the school. However I do think that kids can have their cell phones in case there is ever an emergency. Also in the review they mentioned that parents wanted their kids to have them for safety reasons.
I don’t think that the school board should ban cell phones from school. I have read several articles about how cell phones help improve students’ safety. One article, “Cell Phones- Why Banning Them is a Bad Idea”, talked about issues with kids reaching their parents on September 11th.
“Some of the students told their parents it was hard to reach them [on September 11] because all the public phones were in use and they were not allowed to carry cell phones,” says Marge Feinberg, a spokeswoman for the New York City Board of Education.
That’s why it would be great for us to still be able to have cell phones. I believe that students shouldn’t have their cell phones disrupt or disturb the class, but I think that as long as their cell phone is in their backpack or turned off, it shouldn’t be an issue! Mostly, the reason even for us to have cell phones is for after school activities, whether it’s a sport, or for arrangements getting home. I don’t think that our school has any pay phones. The easiest way then, to get a hold of a parent after school is your phone. That’s why WE SHOULD’NT ban cell phones.
I agree with Melissa that the school should let kids have a cell phone in case there is an emergency to call parents during school, but I have noticed kids who text during school, like Melissa mentioned, and are getting punished or having their phone taken away for a while, I think that, that is a good solution for inappropriate cell phone usage.
I disagree with Libby B. Not all kids at our school get distracted from their schoolwork and the teacher just because of a cell phone. In fact, I know that most people just leave their cell phone in their backpack during the day. And about the taking pictures of tests and texting the pictures, I believe that the teacher would catch them. It’s pretty noticeable if somebody just takes their cell phone out and starts taking pictures. Lastly, I’d like to state that I don’t think that EVERYONE should be punished by a few people using their cell phones. That’s not really fair. If someone gets caught with their cell phone, then they might get punished, but not everyone should get punished for one person’s mistake.
I do not believe that the school board should band cell phones, because after school student can call there parents to tell them if after school activities have been canceled. You could also use them as a way of comminuation to parents to see if you could go over to someone’s house or if they just wanted to know if you got home ok. But there should be a limit to how much you use them in class. You should only be alowd to use phones in the hall way and not be able to take them into the classroom.
i think that our school should not ban cell phones in school. the reason is because most of the parents in the school are agaisnt it because they are concerned about thier childern’s safety. also it would help with the safety because when something goes horriably wrong they can use thier cell phones to call thier parents instead of using the very buisy public phones.
i agree with summer bacause kids are already not supposed to have cell phones in school, yet they still do. so if you ban them that will just make kids want to bring them in even more. that is why i agree with summer that cell phones should not be banned.
I think that the school should ban cell phone usage, to an extent. Cell phones should not be allowed outside of a backpack within the school, but students should be able to use them once outside of the school. During emergencies, the rule should be overlooked so that students can call their parents. However, calling of authorities (such as the police) should be left to administrators, who would be allowed to have cell phones on their person. If this is implemented, students will not be able to disrupt class, threaten the school, or commit any other irresponsible activity with cell phones. However, they will still be able to call if after-school activities are cancelled and can use the teacher or administrator’s phone if they have to stay after school. That is my opinion on the cell phone ban.
I think that the school board SHOULD NOT ban cell phones in school. I stand by this position because even if the school were to ban cell phone use, students would still be sneaking them in anyway. Just like in New York, parents want students to bring their cell phones to school in case of another event like the crashing of the twin towers on September 11th. All they want is for their children to be safe. It should be the student’s responsibility to keep their phones from being stolen. Thievery should not be a reason to ban cell phones. The students should be allowed to bring them at their own risk. I believe our school should keep the rule that we already have which is that they have to be off and in the students’ lockers during school hours. This way, if students have to contact their parents after school to get a ride home, they can do so. If the students fail to follow these rules, the teacher should have a right to confiscate them without a parent consult. Again, I think there is no point in kids even having cell phones if they can’t take them with them wherever they go in case of an emergency. That is the whole reason why they were invented. Kids should be allowed to use them as long as they use them responsibly.
I agree with Thai’s position because many students do walk home from school by themselves. If someone was to do something to them, and they didn’t have a cell phone, they could be in an extensive amount of danger. Our school board should trust that the students will not take advantage of having that privilege. Even if students do disobey the rules, they are only hurting themselves. This could cause their grades to go down from texting in class, or put them at risk of having their phone confiscated. Ninety percent of us already do keep our cell phones in our lockers. The people who follow the rules shouldn’t have to be punished because of the people who disobey the rules. If the school board really did care about our safety, they should not abandon cell phone use.
I disagree with Reece’s point about the cell phones working better than the administrators’ phones. In the article “School Safety: Cell Phones, Camera Phones, & Pagers”, it states that too many students using their cell phones could overload the phone system. Doing this would cause some important calls, such as to the police or fire department, to not make it to the recipient. Cell phones could also (potentially) set off bombs in the school, which would further put the school in harm’s way. I must ask, however, what are the cons of using the public phone over a cell phone?
I agree with Isabella because it is best if kids are able to contact their parents in case of an emergency or change of plans. I also think that she had a good point by saying that if something was to happen and kids needed to call their parents that it would be good to have more then four phones for 120 kids to use. I agree that the school board should not ban cell phones.
I agree with Lauren, because sometimes students planes change on short notice and they may need to contact there parents in an emergency. If students are only allowed to take there phones to school for after school purposes and to use in the hall ways they will no longer be a disruption to class. It is also a good idea for students to have their phones, because they could get hurt durning the day and may need to contact there parents quickly and normally parents cell numbers and in the contact list.
I think that the schools SHOULD ban cell phone use in the schools because if there is a kid in the classroom who is texting or playing games on there phone they are obviously not paying attention to what the teacher is talking about. When the students bring there cell phones into the classroom it just creates a greater danger for the school, with kids talking to people they shouldn’t be talking to or doing things on there phone they shouldn’t be doing. Even if the schools let kid in with cell phones doesn’t mean that they can do things in the classroom with there phone. The students would be completely blowing off there academics if they leave there phone on during the school day. There is plenty of time outside of school for the phones to be on. With the use of cell phones in school there is a greater chance of conflict between people.
I disagree with Morgan because even if there is a huge tragedy like the 9/11 terrorist attacks its not like the schools don’t have ways of getting hold of the parents and guardians of the school. All of the schools in America I’m sure have some sort of way of contacting people outside of the school system. Even if it is the student’s responsibility to not get the phones stolen they will be constantly thinking about ‘well what if my phone does get stolen’ or ‘I think someone stole my phone.’
I think that the school board SHOULD NOT ban cell phones in school. I am not saying this just because I am a kid who uses my cell phone in the classroom, I have my other reasons too. Many states or places have actually lifted bans since September 11th. Like in the article from Education World “A lot of parents want them for safety’s sake.” Nowadays no one knows what could happen at any second of any day. From weather, to real world threats, parents need a way to contact their children. It could also be as simple as a parent needing to call their child just to say they will be late picking them up from school. Also think about it, from the article on the ban in New York City, they have metal detectors to make sure kids don’t have their phones when they come to school. They sneak them in anyway, in sometimes the weirdest ways possible. Now, in school cell phones are banned being in class, but kids bring them to class anyway. They isn’t really a way to stop this. Kids can be sneaky. I think that cell phones SHOULD NOT be banned totally from schools.
I am responding to Patrick’s post. I do not totally disagree with the points he made or his opinion itself. But, I don’t think everyone should have to pay the consequences of another kids actions. Maybe the teachers or school board should come up with a bigger consequence for being caught with a cell phone in class. Banning them completely is just a little harsh I think. Patrick, did you always have this opinion or did reading the articles make you think otherwise? Usually kids with cell phones go against banning them I think.
I think the school board shouldnt ban cell phones perminatley because the rule will get broken. I think more and more people will just get into trouble and it will ruin there records and they will get grounded alot more, because I know that people are upsessed with their cell phone. I think they should inforce a rule that their is only cell phones in the hallway but not in the classroom to interupt their thinking time. I asked someone how they feel without a cell phone and they said unsafe. Now i know we want the kids in our schools to feel safe.
I am respinding to patricks point of view. He stated responding to emily’s opinion that kids have another way to get a connection to their parents. Well i think some students may spaz out about how to reach their parent and might bump into some one dangerous trying to look for a way to contact parents. I think a cell phone shouldnt be a social thing it should be a saftey thing to make sure their parents know where they are at all times.
I think that the school board should not ban cell phones in schools. My reasons for taking this position are as follows. What if someone needs to contact their parent because something happend. And sure you might say they could go to the office and call home, but what if they were walking home then they might be to far away from the school. Our what if there parents need to call them because they are going to be late because of traffic. And that is why cell phones should not be ban.
I agree with Reece because students will probably need them after school if there is an emergencey. They should not be allowed in class rooms or to be on during schools. They shoud only be allowed to use them after school.
I think that both sides have good reasons. However… I believe that cell phones should not be banned. They are a fantastic technology that has a good purpose The rules should be more enforced though. I admit, I have a cell phone, but I keep it in my locker if I bring it at all.
